Highlights MSCL Season 2009

The 2009 Markham Softball Mayors Shield Cricket Tournament concluded on Sunday May 26th 2009 at Elson Park in Markham.

This softball cricket tournament is the seventh year of existence, and has become one of the premier softball cricket tournaments in Ontario. The tournament is conducted with the highest standards of discipline, sportsmanship, and adherence to set rules and regulations formulated by the league.

The league is operated through a very dedicated board of directors along with a panel of umpires, panel of match referrers and scorers.

The 2009 tournament had eight teams participating and each team was equally poised to become the champions. The tournament is carried out on a three game knockout, with 25 overs.

All the regular games concluded with close margins, and the final ended with the most exciting game of the season. The two teams that came to the finals were the Matrix cricket club and the Birdletown cricket club. The other teams that participated were the Burghres cricket club, the Malays cricket club, the Markham Lions Cricket club, the Patels Cricket Club, the Milner Cricket Club and the CIMA Cricket Club.

The Matrix Cricket Club batted first making 67 runs in 24 overs ( The finals was played with 25 overs) and the Bridletown Cricket Club replied with 68 runs with the last pair having to make five runs in 4 balls of the 25th over. It was exciting cricket at its best for softball cricket.

The commentators for the finals game was Mr Sonna Saravanmuttu and Mr Adrian Goonasekera. The match referee was Mr Mohan Perera and the scorers were Mr Sunil Somatissa and Mr Eddie Gomez.

The umpires for the finals was Mr Russel Mustachi (VP of the MSCL) and Mr Noel De Motte.

The MSCL 2009 MVP AWARDS was presented to Mr Raj Sri-Harren from the MSCL board members.

The evening ended with great open-air BAILA music session provided by the two experienced DJ’s Mr Glen Ragell & Cricket D J Bede Beckmere.

The chief guest at the finals was Markham councilor Mr John Webster who represented the Mayor of Markham Mr Frank Scarpitti.
