The beginning of spring was also the beginning of a new chapter to the Sri Lankan Diaspora in Canada as an exclusive club called the "Canada Sri Lanka Club" was given birth in March 2009. This unique project took wings in Canada’s economic capital Toronto as a company with a great track record on making successful ventures between Sri Lanka and Canada unleashed its latest plans that will tremendously benefit the two nations and cricketers alike.

“Can Indo Lanka” which initiated a fruitful marriage in March 2008 between Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the Canadian Cricket Association (CCA) which resulted in the two organizations earning more than a half a million dollars and which paved the way for the biggest cricket tournament in Canadian soil is hopeful that the formation of the "Canada Sri Lanka Club" will continue to see gains in the cricket arena both here in Canada and in Sri Lanka.

Speaking to reporters the chair of the executive committee was hopeful that the Club will produce young cricketers who’ll go on to represent the Canadian National Cricket team in the very near future. "Canada has always being a great friend to Sri Lanka and it is time to return the favour" were the words of another committee member.

We have a large number of cricketers who are presently residing in Canada and it is our duty to create a suitable platform for these cricketers to be recognized and thereby equip them to reach world class status, said Romesh Angunawela the President of the Canada Sri Lanka Club.

General Manager Mr. Ratnakumar who will have the daunting task of gathering cricketers to represent the club said that he is only interested in cricketers who would ultimately want to represent Canada.

He went on to say that the executive committee is keen in making the selection on merits and we will only invest in cricketers who are serious about the game. Ratnakumar went on to say that playing for the “Canada Sri Lanka Club” would be a definite advantage to any cricketer as the company has enjoyed a good backing from world renown cricketers and this trend will no doubt grow stronger in the coming years.

Plans are underway to get the best possible training for all the cricketers of the “Canada Sri Lanka Club “ and this will include coaching camps conducted by Sri Lankan crickets legends. Some members will be flown to Sri Lanka for training in the areas of batting, bowling etc and will have the privilege of learning the latest techniques from past and present Sri Lankan national players and the club hopes to confirm these arrangements in the near future.

Cricketers who are interested in joining the club will need to get in touch with the General Manager Mr. Ratnakumar who will only entertain serious players and the person’s character would be of utmost importance as cricket is a gentleman’s game and the club wants to maintain a healthy environment for cricketers.

In order to maintain its standards the club adheres to very strict disciplinary policies and will not hesitate to cancel membership in material of how brilliant a player may be. Any one who is interested is requested to get in touch with Mr. Ratnakumar and a membership application will need to be submitted for approval by the executive committee.

We understand that the task ahead is not going to be a simple one but we are determined to see it through voiced the chair of the Committee. We will also get a ladies team up running at the same time and we welcome the community to apply for membership as there is a limitation on the number of members that will be enrolled.

“Canada Sri Lanka Club” is not limited to Sri Lankans as any cricketer who’s serious about the game can take the opportunity of being a member of the Club and we believe that the right balance in material of there ethnicity is the perfect ingredient in forming the best cricket team in Canada.
