A day without a job will no doubt be a day that you would be funding out of your own savings. It is crucial that you realize that you are not on holiday and start looking for a job before your saving tank runs dry. Many tend to take it easy during the first month as they begin to understand the Canadian way of life which is quite natural. But constantly being at parties would not only get you broke quick but will keep you out of the work force for a period of time. Networking is important but if you think people in Canada are waiting till you land to find you employment, you better think again. Although some may genuinely want you employed it is a different world here, where people hardly have time for other people.
Get smart, and start hitting a resource centre that is sponsored by the government which will help you integrate faster to the work force by coaching you on how to prepare your resume ( CV / Bio Data). You have the privilege of using their computers, fax machines, Telephones etc for free. Advise that you receive may turn to be very helpful. Find a resource centre that works well for you and be willing to put some hours every day to get into the work force.
While allocating time in a resource centre try to find some odd job to help pay your bills. Remember, every dollar you spend of your saving for laboring in the hot sun is money lost forever. There are many Odd jobs such as working in fast food restaurants, Cleaning offices-Super markets, working in a gas station, doing a security job, Doing shipping & receivables and many more. Although there are many odd jobs available just remember that millions just like you are looking for employment. So, get out there and try to visit these locations in trying to nail a temporary job till you get yourself back on track. There are many temporary employment agencies scattered around the country who may be able to get you employed.
Note: a temporary job may pay you $8 - $10 an hour. Usually people work a maximum 35hrs a week and you will be paid every 2 weeks. The pay structure is quite different from the monthly pay roll that runs in Sri Lanka.
Note : try to be employed in the evening hours ( Evening Shift ) which will leave you with more time in the morning to look for a better job or to do the necessary research to get find out how fast you can get back into your trained profession or have your qualifications accessed by regulatory bodies. Try to interact more with industry experts as we can only give you a general idea.
The Idea behind a temporary job is that you would not spend a penny of what you’ve brought from Sri Lanka. If you take this mission to be easy as ABC, you’ll find your savings depleted in no time. It’s best you hang on to your savings as an emergency cash buffer.
