Your Canadian style résumé and Interview

Doing up an attractive resume helps you get the ideal job.

There are many government sponsored resource centers that are well equipped to help you in this area for free of charge. They are well coached to advise new comers.

Résumé styles often change as recruiters would adopt new styles to screen in order to pick the candidate of their choice.

There really are no set rules but you will want to construct your résumé in a way that allows the recruiter to find your information easily. Résumés that are very long may most certainly get overlooked because most recruiters spend a few seconds with an individual résumé, due to the large amount of application that they tend to receive from potential employees.

You want to make sure that the most important information is on the first page in order to catch the recruiter’s attention. Make sure that you attach an attractive cover letter.

Face the Interview with absolute confidence.

One of the biggest mistakes that candidates make is that they appear at an interview with little or no knowledge about the company that they seek employment in. It is important that you research the company by visiting their website and appear before the recruiters with absolute confidence.

Recruiters are bound to ask you questions on various topics but most importantly would try to evaluate whether you’re a team player or not. Recruiters may ask you similar questions as follows; • Give an example of a time when you were a part of a team assigned to accomplish a difficult task; • Describe a moment where you were put to the test on your planning and organizational skills; • Tell us of a moment you were confronted in dealing with a difficult person and how you brought the situation under control;

Over the years I’ve learnt that many people get unnecessarily scared when it comes to interviews. In spite of them being extremely qualified for the job they tend to shake like a leaf once they appear before the panel. It’s as if a death sentence is about to be passed on them.

As a result they are unable to convince the panel that they are the perfect candidate for the job. On the contrary a person that is less qualified would find himself hired as the person simply appeared to be more confident.

Enter the interview room with absolute confidence. Do not worry about a person of a different culture being the recruiter.

Most of them are well aware of the tremendous Sri Lankan talent that is present in today’s Canadian work force and they will give you a fair chance to prove your case. Take the fear factor out and listen carefully to their questions and be firm with your answers. After all the worse that can happen is for them to say “NO”.

Remember every “NO” is one step closer to your dream job. Never give up. Continue your job hunt with the right attitude and you’ll nail it!

“Always remember the 20 Million people who live in Sri Lanka longing for the opportunity that you sometimes take for granted. Help Sri Lanka when you do well in life and I promise you it will return the favour with a bundle of JOY “
