Ruvindu Gunasekara - Signs of a Star in International Cricket

Ruvindu (18) is a renowned and admired cricketer. This remarkable cricketer represented Canada in the Under 19 – America's Cup Cricket in 2007 and was awarded the Best Batsman of the tournament for recording the highest aggregate of 254 runs. Furthermore he set a new Canadian Under 19 record by scoring 156 runs in a single inning and the young cricketer did not stop there. Ruvindu also went on to establish the best partnership in U19 Cricket by recording 200 runs on the board.

The young Gunasekera who was trained and groomed to be a cricketer since he was 7 yrs of age, gives credit to his dedicated coach and the inspiration behind his success, his father Mr. Niron Gunasekera. His father has also been a cricketer and opened bowling for Sri Lanka "A". Neron has played alongside Master Blaster Sanath Jayasuriya and toured with him when Sanath recorded his triple century against Pakistan some years ago.

Cricket has always been Ruvindu's first love and the young Gunasekera was ambitious to represent Sri Lanka in his early years while he was schooling at St. Peters College, Bambalapitiya, in the land of cricket Sri Lanka. His ambition pushed the 15 year old Ruvindu to take part in Sri Lanka’s U23 domestic cricket tournament where he represented the Tamil Union & Athletic Club.

Here in Canada the young cricketer celebrated a remarkable season by scoring 316 and taking a spot in the Top 10 Batsman list in the domestic Toronto District Cricket League 2009. He represented the Overseas Cricket Club, Toronto.

In the international arena the young and energetic Ruvindu performed extremely well in the recently concluded U19 World Cup qualifier, in Canada. He was named the "Man of the Match" for recording a stunning 57 (not out) against Afghanistan which helped Canada beat the talented visitors. The tournament concluded with Ruvindu scoring 207 runs, which included two entertaining half centuries to register the young lad’s name among the Top cricketers in World Under 19 cricket.

When asked whether he has any hobbies that he would like to share with CanadaSriLanka.com the young cricketer mentioned of his interest in listening to R&B Music with AKON topping his list while he also showed great interest in Sri Lankan Music with Bathiya & Santhush, Eraj & Centigrads being his favourite artist / bands. As for movies he prefers to watch action movies and named Sylvester Stallone’s “Rocky” as one of his favourite movies.

Although Ruvindu wants to be a professional cricketer and be among the best in world cricket he is also serious about his academic qualifications. He is currently enrolled in a Business Management (BBA) course at the Scarborough Campus of the University of Toronto.

Ruvindu is certainly a cricketer to keep a close eye on, as this ambitious cricketer is determined to reach the top in international cricket.
