Ahila and Aruna
A Classy Sister Act
Ahila 19 and Aruna 17, not only share an unbreakable bond as sisters but also a variety of talents including that of creativity and art. These two young ladies grew up in North York with a supportive family and the comfort of each other. Both began their interest in art at a very young age. Aruna at age 7 and Ahila age 8 respectively. Aruna began in sketching while Ahila specialized in painting. Their interest in art translated into the two becoming well-rounded individuals who happen to be exceptional in all areas that they dedicate themselves to.
Though very modest, the Vithiananthan sisters have already held art exhibitions around the City of Toronto and received a variety of awards for their work including - Award of Recognition given by Toronto Mayor David Miller. Their significant achievement in Art is their yearly painting of 12 pictures for corporate calendars. They have painted for corporate calendars for the last 6 consecutive years. Aruna indicates that although art has been a significant part of her life, she has aspirations outside of the world of art. Sentiments shared by her older sister Ahila, who currently just finished her first year of studies at the University of Western pursuing a degree in Health Sciences. Aruna and Ahila do concede that art has definitely been a vessel for them. A wonderful hobby that has afforded them great opportunities and a forum for expression and lessons in patience, dedication and hard work.
In addition to their tremendous talent in the world of art, both of these young ladies are heavily involved in school clubs and community service. As trained avid swimmers, both sisters have coached young children and trained other young people to do the same. Aruna works at children’s camp and tutor’s younger students. Ahila the seemingly athletic one of the two, has been a part of her school track and field, golf and tennis team. She has also worked with numerous academic committees, as too has Aruna. They both have been on the Principal’s Honour Roll.
Both of these developing young women exemplify greatness for their generation. Academically strong, artistically skilled and compassionate towards others and understanding the importance of giving back, Ahila and Aruna are beautiful examples of well-rounded individuals who are ready to take on the world. Soon Aruna will be joining her sister at Western studying Arts and Humanities and continuing to pave the road for those young people who will be following behind her. Ahila wants young people to know that art is rewarding but also a long process to get from where you start to where you will end. A wonderful metaphor that could be used towards life itself. Congratulations Ahila and Aruna on becoming Canada Sri Lanka’s Youth of the Month!
